DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) — A day after a fiery attack against Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler left him with extreme burns, we’re learning more about the suspect who says he did it.
The Danville Police Department said they first responded to the report of a man on fire on Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found Vogler suffering from burns, which first responders said covered 63% of his body.
According to court documents, 29-year-old Shotsie Buck-Hayes admitted to pouring gasoline on Vogler. He’s accused of setting the councilman on fire–and Buck-Hayes said he was trying to kill him.
Here’s what we know about Shotsie Buck-Hayes.

According to police, Buck-Hayes and Vogler knew one another. Pictures of the two together have resurfaced on social media after the attack, including one image in which Vogler’s family and Buck-Hayes’ family posed smiling together for a selfie.
We’ve also obtained court documents that show Buck-Hayes and his wife filed for divorce two weeks ago.
Police said Buck-Hayes didn’t have any prior arrests on his record. Now, he’s facing an attempted first-degree murder charge, as well as an aggravated malicious wounding charge.
We’re still trying to uncover the motive behind the attack, but police did say it was not related to Vogler’s status as an elected official. The incident was over a “personal matter” unrelated to politics, police said.
