Yesterday was “Mothering Sunday” in the U.K., a holiday where Kate Middleton and Prince William typically share a brand new photo of their family. But not this year! Kate broke royal tradition and—instead of sharing a photo of herself with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—shared a video about “Mother Nature.”
As she put it, “Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary. This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognise how our bond with the natural world can help not only nurture our inner selves, but remind us too of the role we play within the rich tapestry of life. C.”
Just FYI, the decision not to post a pic comes one year after Kate’s photoshop scandal.

I mean, cute pic, but there were multiple glaring photoshop errors (Charlotte’s sleeve!), which resulted in photo agencies pulling the image from servers. The Associated Press even released a “kill notification” in all-caps, reading, “AT CLOSER INSPECTION IT APPEARS THAT THE SOURCE HAS MANIPULATED THE IMAGE.”
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reported that Kensington Palace was “thrown completely off guard” by the backlash to this picture, and had to enter “crisis talks,” resulting in Kate issuing a statement of apology. “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she wrote. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”
So yeah. Not shocking that Kate chose to pass on the whole family photo thing this year.
