There are very few trades that work the way the one with Jose Caballero and the New York Yankees just did.
Caballero, up until about 5:55 p.m. ahead of the 6 p.m. trade deadline, played for the Tampa Bay Rays.

But then the Yankees traded for Caballero. And the Rays were playing at Yankee Stadium, in the seventh inning, when it happened.
Caballero hugged his teammates in the dugout, and he just had a short walk to meet his new teammates.
According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, it’s promising prospect Everson Pereira and a player to be named going later.

Caballero can play all over the infield, but one thing he does is give the Yankees an alternative to Anthony Volpe, who has 16 home runs but also a league-worst 16 errors this season.

The 28-year old Caballero leads MLB right now with 34 steals after leading the AL in steals a season ago with 44. He’s only batting .226, but the extra-base-taking speed helps his cause.
Pereira, going the other way, is a 24-year old outfield prospect.
This season at Triple-A, Pereira has a .254 average and 19 homers, with an OPS of .864.

Caballero will have to adjust to a new team, but at least it’s the last game of the series against the Rays. It’d probably be extra weird for him to have to play his first new games in pinstripes against his old team.

The Yankees had a busy deadline season. They’ve added a bunch of veteran bats. They’re definitely going for it.
Caballero looks to be the last get. It’s a smart move that can only help, and the Yanks will just have to hope Pereira doesn’t turn into a star for the Rays.
