Watch: Rapper Young Scooter Dead at 39 on His Birthday

More information is emerging about Young Scooter’s untimely passing.

After the Atlanta rapper (real name Kenneth Edward Bailey) died on his 39th birthday March 28, a Fulton County medical examiner’s press report has listed his cause of death as “penetrating injury of the right thigh,” ruling the manner of death as accidental.

The report, released online April 1, added, “Mr. Bailey sustained a penetrating injury of his right thigh that created marked blood loss. This injury was not a gunshot wound. Mr. Bailey injured himself on organic (wooden) fencing material and/or woody debris after vaulting at least one fence.”

During a press conference, Atlanta Police Department Lt. Andrew Smith shared additional information about the incident—though at the time, did not identify Young Scooter by name—confirmed a 39-year-old died after suffering a leg injury while fleeing the scene where police had responded to a dispute involving a weapon.

“It was advised in the call remarks that shots were fired and a female was dragged back into the location,” he said. “Once officers arrived, they knocked on the door. A male opened the door and immediately shut the door on the officers.”

Smith explained police established a perimeter at which time two men fled the back of the house. One reportedly returned inside while the other jumped two fences as he fled.

“When officers located him on the other side of the fence, he appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg. Officers rendered aid, and he was transported to Gray Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” he added. “The injury that was sustained was not via the officers on the scene. It was while the male was fleeing.”

According to Smith, it appeared the man had sustained “some type of fracture or injuries to the leg,” which he noted was bleeding. He clarified no shots were fired during the incident, which remains under investigation.

In the hours leading up to his death, Young Scooter had reshared Birthday messages and well wishes from loved ones, colleagues and fans to his social media.

Following his death, his son Kenneth Bailey Jr. shared a tribute to his father.

“Damn my best friend gone,” he wrote on his Instagram Stories. “Happy Birthday too. I know exactly what to do fasho tho you know I got my sisters and brothers.”

He added in a March 31 post dedicated to his father, “You crushed everything in me that’s all to it. Never gone heal I’ll deal wit it tho.”
