“I was eating lunch and then my dad just comes running around the corner saying, ‘Ovi just scored! Ovi just scored!'” Wyatt Borgeson, 15, told 7News before hopping on the ice for a game.
“It was really exciting,” Leandra Barger, 14, said. “It inspires me to like, anything you put your mind to, you always achieve.”
“I was definitely watching,” Miles Maximov, 16, said. “I think everybody from Washington and beyond was.”
All three high schoolers have been lacing up their skates since their elementary years.
“When I first hit the ice, I just fell in love with the sport,” Borgeson said.
“It’s very different from any other sport. I mean it’s very fast-paced,” Maximov said. “I also like that it’s a team sport and there’s a lot of bonding that happens.”
They bond over not only plays but also players like Ovi.

“It’s just awesome to see that hockey is getting recognition in Washington because of someone like Ovi,” Maximov said. “Obviously, a really big moment in the sport.”
It’s a moment these three will look up to for years to come.
“It definitely gives me some insight into how pros play and what I need to work on in the future,” Borgeson said.
“It was just really inspiring,” Barger said. “His determination, because whenever he misses the goal or something or he doesn’t score, he always regroups after he gets kind of mad.”
“I thought for the longest time that none of Gretzky‘s records would be achievable, but then seeing Ovi come along and he was able to dominate and even break that record — it’s just really inspiring me to see that anything is possible in sports if you put that effort in,” Maximov said.
