- Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers is known for his quick release, reminiscent of Dan Marino.
- Ewers grew up hearing about Marino from his father and has studied Marino’s film.
- Ewers credits his quick release to natural talent honed by practice and coaching from Jeff Christiansen.
MIAMI GARDENS — The scouting reports agree. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, a seventh-round pick of the Miami Dolphins, has a “quick, snappy release.” Or a “quick-twitch release” or a “sudden release.” Call it what you like.
Of course, anytime a quarterback on the Dolphins can get rid of the ball with the swiftness that drives edge rushers nuts, it conjures memories of a certain QB in Dolphins history who did it better than anybody.
No, that’s not to say Ewers is the next Dan Marino. Only to say Ewers is aware of the connection.
“My dad would always tell me when I’m growing up that I need to have a quick release like Dan Marino,” Ewers said. “So I grew up hearing my dad talk about him all the time.”
Ewers was intrigued enough to check out film of Marino. But now that he’s a Dolphin, Ewers will soon meet the real-life version and be able to pick Marino’s brain if he wishes. Marino is a Dolphins special advisor and regularly is in the facility.

Of course, the release Ewers has developed wasn’t by accident.
“I’ve always felt that I’ve always I was always a natural thrower of the football and it always came natural to me,” Ewers said. “But I mean it took a lot of work for sure because you know I give a lot of credit to it was my quarterback coach by the name of Jeff Christiansen and the quick release really starts from my feet and I want to get my my front foot down as fast as possible, which allows me to have that that quick release at those critical moments.”
